Reading, Writing and Rhyme…

An underpinning skill to literacy is the ability to identify and manipulate the sounds in words. This skill is known as phonemic awareness. It includes being able to segment sounds in words (the sounds in ‘cat’ are c-a-t), blend sounds together to make words (d-o-g makes ‘dog’) and manipulate sounds in words (clap without the l is cap). Phonemic awareness is one of the important skills a child requires in order to successfully develop their ability to read and spell. Children also need to develop their letter-sound knowledge and have the ability to understand what they are reading.

Literacy is a language-based skill!
