The connection between sounds in words and literacy…

Phonological awareness is the first step in early literacy and involves knowledge about sounds and syllables in words. This foundation skill is required before a child can be expected to further develop their reading and writing skills, much like you would require a solid slab before constructing a house on top. It is important for children to learn that words are made up of sounds and that these sounds can be manipulated. A Speech Pathologist is able to assess phonological awareness skills to determine how a child is tracking with this foundational skill for literacy development and if necessary, provide support for them to keep up with curriculum and age expectations. If you have any queries about your child's phonological awareness or literacy skills, contact us to see if an assessment is recommended.
